The tragedy in Minneapolis has left many of us at a loss for words. Watching the images of the tragedy and the heroes that rose from the rubble has been both heart wrenching and heart warming. Katie Couric had a very thought provoking commentary on the catastrophic event at the close of Thursday night's CBS Evening News. I encourage everyone to take 2 minutes out of your busy day and watch and listen to what she has to say. The images are powerful, but the message is even more so. These are questions we all should be asking of our elected officials before another bridge collapses.

I have posted the commentary on You Tube at http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=C6A21F929B66CC94.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this disaster. If any good can come of this, maybe it will be that another similar tragedy can be prevented. We can only hope.

1 Deputy Dead, another critical, suspect at large
by Lawrence Estep
updated 10:43 PM CT 6/18/07

One Floyd County, Indiana sheriff's deputy is dead and another is critically wounded this evening after being shot with a high-powered rifle while responding to the home of a 15-year old after 911 operators received a report of a domestic distrurbance at the residence. Over a dozen police agencies, including the Louisville, KY Police Department, Floyd County SWAT, New Albany Police, have been searching for the gunmen for several hours. A number of surrounding homes have been evacuated and residents in the area have been told to not answer their doors if someone knocks. Several residents have taken refuge at the nearby Georgetown Fire Department station and they are anxiously awaiting word on when they can return home.

An Indiana State Police spokesperson commented in a news conference a little over an hour ago that authorities believed that they had the suspect "cornered" but that he was still not in custody. WLKY-TV in Louisville is now reporting that a Louisville Police Department spokesperson confirmed that officer Frank Denzinger, a 4-year veteran of the FCPD, has died from injuries he suffered.

The scary part about this whole situation is that this kid is 15-years old, and his My Space page is even scarier. Just looking at a few of his friend's pages paints a frightening image of a segment of today's youth. Many include multiple drug references, obvious dislike and hatred of authority, and are very dark and disturbing in nature. This hits close to home for me as I have friends on this department and I also have a brother close to this kids age. It makes you think.
